The United Nations Security Council is set to convene today, Friday, September 12th, at 19:00 GMT, to address the serious incident involving Russian drones shot down over Polish airspace earlier this week. This urgent session comes as NATO members significantly bolster their defenses along the alliance’s eastern flank in response to what Poland has described as an unprecedented Russian incursion.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 10th, saw three Russian drones intercepted after crossing into Polish territory. Additional drones were later found crashed across eastern Poland. The event marks the most severe incursion of its kind into a NATO member country since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, prompting widespread concern among alliance members.

In a rapid show of solidarity, several NATO nations have pledged immediate support. The Netherlands and the Czech Republic are deploying troops, artillery, and air defense systems to Poland. Germany has committed to intensifying its engagement along NATO’s eastern border and expanding air policing efforts over Poland, while Lithuania is set to receive a German brigade and enhanced warning capabilities for potential Russian attacks originating from Ukraine.

Speaking to parliament on Thursday, Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted these concrete declarations of support, noting that France and Britain could also deploy aircraft to secure the eastern flank. Polish President Karol Nawrocki, echoing sentiments from German and French counterparts, labeled the incursion a “Russian provocation… an attempt to test our capabilities.”

While experts remain divided on whether the drone incursion was accidental or deliberate, NATO’s top military commander, Alexus Grynkewich, acknowledged on Thursday that the precise number of drones and the intent behind the act are still under investigation. Nevertheless, with growing apprehension among countries bordering Russia, both NATO and Poland are taking no chances, reinforcing their collective security in the face of escalating regional tensions.
