DOJ Seeks Death Penalty for Suspect in Fatal Charlotte Light Rail Stabbing

Decarlos Brown Jr., the 34-year-old suspect in the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail system on August 22, is now facing federal charges that could make him eligible for the death penalty, the Justice Department announced. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of North Carolina has charged Brown with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, escalating the legal repercussions for the brutal incident.

U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson described the attack as a “terroristic act” during a recent press conference, emphasizing the commitment to justice for 23-year-old Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman who was on her way home from work when she was murdered. The incident, captured on video, has sparked widespread outrage, prompting significant responses from local and federal officials.

In response to public safety concerns, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced an immediate increase in security on commuter trains. CATS security personnel are being redeployed for a stronger presence on Blue Line platforms, with police also increasing patrols across the transit system. Additionally, CATS plans to roll out new safety operations, including bike units and urban terrain vehicles, over the next few weeks.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has publicly criticized the city’s handling of transit safety, stating the department is investigating Charlotte for its “failure to protect Iryna Zarutska.” North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein also condemned the unprovoked murder, calling for more police presence to ensure public safety.

Brown, who has a history of criminal offenses, was arrested on August 22. Officials confirmed Zarutska, who had a vibrant life working and volunteering, will be buried in the United States, honoring her family’s wishes.
