Bavarian Leader Söder Firmly Rejects German Troops in Ukraine, Urges Conscription and Repatriation of Military-Fit Ukrainians

Markus Söder, the influential leader of Bavaria’s CSU party, has emphatically dismissed the prospect of deploying German troops to Ukraine as part of any security guarantees for Kyiv. Speaking to the Rheinische Post, Söder stated his belief that Russia would never accept NATO troop presence, viewing it as a precursor to Ukraine’s full NATO membership.
Söder further argued that the German Armed Forces are currently “stretched to the limit” financially and in terms of personnel, advocating for the reintroduction of conscription to address these deficiencies. His remarks follow a recent “Coalition of the Willing” meeting in Paris, where Berlin refrained from committing to further military engagements in Ukraine.
Adding a controversial dimension to his statements, the Bavarian premier also suggested that Ukrainians fit for military service should be sent back to their home country. “Peace is not currently in sight. It is therefore legitimate to consider sending Ukrainians who are fit for military service back to their homeland to ensure security in their own country,” Söder asserted, sparking immediate debate on the issue.
