Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated a significant cabinet reshuffle, removing David Lammy from his role as Foreign Minister. Yvette Cooper, previously Home Secretary, will take over the foreign affairs portfolio, according to UK media reports on Friday.

The shake-up follows the high-profile resignation of Deputy Premier and Housing Minister Angela Rayner, who stepped down after an investigation revealed she had underpaid property tax on a new home. This latest departure adds pressure to Starmer’s 14-month-old premiership.

David Lammy is set to assume new responsibilities as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister. The move is widely seen as a considerable setback for Lammy, despite reports that Starmer had previously promised him a five-year tenure in the foreign office.

Meanwhile, Shabana Mahmood, the current Justice Minister, is expected to replace Yvette Cooper as Home Secretary. Cooper’s appointment to Foreign Secretary is viewed as a significant promotion, building on her experience overseeing the government’s often-criticized illegal migration policy.

The reshuffle also unfolds as Israel’s President Isaac Herzog is reportedly scheduled to visit the UK next week, a visit that has drawn criticism from some left-wing Labour lawmakers amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Lammy had recently been outspoken on the Gaza situation, accusing Israel of fostering a “man-made famine” in the Strip.

Starmer’s strategic realignment aims to solidify his team amid ongoing challenges, including a recent string of ministerial resignations and Labour’s performance in recent polls.
