New York City Mayor Eric Adams has firmly declared his intention to remain in the city’s mayoral race, dismissing a recent report suggesting that advisors to former President Donald Trump were crafting a plan to nominate Adams as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The alleged maneuver, first reported by The New York Times, was reportedly aimed at convincing Adams to abandon his campaign, thereby simplifying the contest for a challenger against current front-runner, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.

Speaking to reporters outside his Gracie Mansion residence on Friday, Mayor Adams was unequivocal. “I’m running for reelection,” he stated, adding, “I’m going to beat Mamdani.” He then departed without taking questions.

The speculation around Adams’ potential exit had fueled discussions about its impact on the crowded mayoral field. Should Adams, whose re-election bid is considered a long shot, withdraw, it could significantly boost the prospects of independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

President Trump, commenting shortly after Adams’ statement, acknowledged the complexity of the race. “I would say that Cuomo might have a chance of winning if it was a one-on-one,” Trump remarked to reporters. “If it’s not one-on-one, it’s going to be a hard race.” He further expressed his desire for fewer candidates, stating, “I think if you have more than one candidate. We’ve got ourselves a communist mayor in New York.”
