Trump Calls for Shake-Up in NYC Mayoral Race, Urging Rivals to Exit Against Mamdani

President Donald Trump has injected himself into New York City’s heated mayoral contest, stating Thursday that he believes Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani is poised to win unless two of his major opponents withdraw from the race. Trump, however, declined to specify which candidates he hoped would drop out, despite acknowledging a desire for a one-on-one contest.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, has held a presumptive lead since his decisive victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the June Democratic primary. The upcoming November 4 election features a crowded field, including incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (running as an independent despite his primary loss), Cuomo (also an independent), and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Trump’s comments came during a White House dinner, where he suggested a consolidated field would offer a better chance against Mamdani. This intervention follows reports of intermediaries for Trump reaching out to Mayor Adams’s circle to discuss a potential federal job offer, which could prompt Adams to abandon his re-election bid. Adams, however, has vehemently denied any intention to quit, reiterating his commitment to the race despite growing pressure and previous corruption charges that were dropped after he reportedly agreed to assist with Trump’s immigration initiatives.

Both Cuomo and Sliwa have also dismissed calls to withdraw. Cuomo publicly urged Adams to step aside, arguing for a stronger unified front against Mamdani. Meanwhile, Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder, has asserted his own viability and commitment to staying in the race until election day, refuting any suggestions of a Trump administration outreach to encourage his departure.
