Florida is poised to become the first U.S. state to eliminate all vaccine mandates, including those currently required for children attending public schools, such as vaccinations against polio, measles, and chickenpox. The announcement, made during a recent news conference, has ignited a fierce debate over public health policy.

Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, a vocal critic of vaccine requirements, likened the mandates to “slavery” and asserted, “Who am I to tell you what your child should put in your body? I don’t have that right. Your body is a gift from God.” Ladapo pledged to end “all of them, every last one of them,” though state officials did not provide a timeline or specific details on how the repeals would be executed. Many mandates would require a vote by the Republican-led state legislature, while others could be scrapped by the state health department.

The initiative has drawn sharp criticism from health professionals and Democratic lawmakers. State Representative Anna Eskamani labeled the plan “reckless and dangerous,” warning of a “public health disaster in the making.” The Florida Education Association, representing over 120,000 educators, also condemned the move, arguing it would disrupt student learning and compromise school safety by increasing health risks.

While every U.S. state currently requires children to be vaccinated for school attendance, policies regarding exemptions vary. Florida’s proposed sweeping ban marks a significant departure from established public health practices nationwide.
