A recent in-depth camera comparison at the New York Botanical Garden’s annual orchid show has revealed surprising results for the latest generation of flagship smartphones. Pitting the Apple iPhone 16 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, and OnePlus 13 against each other, the review highlighted significant software challenges for Apple’s latest, while an unexpected contender emerged.

While the iPhone 16 Pro ultimately secured the ‘Best Overall’ title for its consistent color accuracy and natural depth of field, its performance was hampered by a buggy camera application. Testers reported frequent app crashes, particularly when using the new Camera Control button, and persistent issues with focusing on subjects without defaulting to an often-inferior macro mode.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, known for its extensive features, delivered fantastic results much of the time and excelled in capturing details. However, it struggled with color accuracy, often underexposing images and oversaturating reds, leading to a loss of detail in vibrant blooms. The inconsistency in image quality between different modes was also a notable drawback.

The biggest surprise came from the OnePlus 13. This device consistently produced photos with vibrant colors and sharp details, often outperforming its more established rivals in specific scenarios. Despite its impressive highs, the OnePlus 13 suffered from occasional, severe color reproduction errors and limited control options, such as the inability to force high-resolution shots through the native app. Its potential, however, was undeniable, with testers noting it could be the clear winner if its inconsistencies were addressed.

A critical finding across all devices was the problematic nature of smartphone macro photography. Testers advised against using the automatic macro mode whenever possible, as it often degrades image quality, reduces resolution, and introduces distracting backgrounds. While the OnePlus 13 handled macro slightly better, the general consensus was that dedicated macro modes on these flagships still fall short.

Despite its software glitches, the iPhone 16 Pro’s ability to produce images closest to a dedicated Fujifilm X-T5 camera in terms of true-to-life color and natural bokeh ultimately swayed the final recommendation, though the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s detail capture and the OnePlus 13’s surprising prowess make the competition tighter than ever.
