Beijing, China – In a powerful display of its rapidly advancing military capabilities, China today showcased its full nuclear triad, alongside a formidable array of new missiles, advanced counter-drone systems, and laser technology during a major military parade in Tiananmen Square. The event, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, was overseen by Chinese leader Xi Jinping and attended by notable world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

Among the most significant revelations were two new road-mobile Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), dubbed the DF-31BJ and DF-61, which appear to be enhancements to existing designs. The parade also marked the debut of the JL-1 Air-Launched Ballistic Missile (ALBM), likely intended for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s H-6N bombers, bolstering China’s air-based nuclear deterrence.

Beyond its nuclear arsenal, China unveiled a suite of conventional weaponry, including the YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missiles, demonstrating a significant leap in its naval strike capabilities. A new land-based missile system, the HQ-29, captured considerable attention. Experts suggest its size and configuration indicate it could serve as a dual-purpose anti-satellite interceptor and mid-course ballistic missile defense system, a capability that would profoundly enhance China’s strategic defense posture, similar to the US THAAD system.

The parade further highlighted China’s focus on modern warfare with new counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS). These included innovative gun and missile systems designed to counter drone swarms, as well as vehicle-mounted microwave and laser weapons, such as the shipboard LY-1 High Energy Laser system. These advanced systems underscore China’s commitment to projecting its military might and signaling its technological prowess on the global stage.
