Longtime Democratic Representative Jerry Nadler, a prominent liberal voice and New York’s longest-serving member of Congress, has announced he will not seek re-election. In revealing his decision to The New York Times, Nadler cited a crucial need for generational change within the Democratic Party and the broader political landscape.

Nadler, who represented a significant portion of Manhattan and previously chaired the influential House Judiciary Committee, highlighted the recent departure of former President Joe Biden from the last election as a key factor in his decision. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” Nadler told the Times.

Despite his seniority, Nadler had been facing potential primary challenges from younger, more progressive candidates, and his influence in Washington had reportedly been waning, evidenced by his removal from the top Democratic spot on the House Judiciary Committee. His deep-blue Manhattan seat is widely expected to remain under Democratic control in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
