Veteran indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s latest feature, ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’, has premiered this evening at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, immediately sparking conversation among critics.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, and Charlotte Rampling. It explores the intricate dynamics of estranged siblings who reunite, confronting unresolved tensions and reevaluating their relationships with their emotionally distant parents.

Initial critical reception for the Mubi-backed production has largely skewed positive, though many reviewers noted its distinctly low-key and understated nature, even by Jarmusch’s standards. Deadline’s Damon Wise described it as an “elevated cringe comedy” that subtly lingers, while The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw awarded it four out of five stars, praising its “contentment and calm,” and “Zen simplicity.”

IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio gave the film an A-, highlighting its ability to provide “almost everything if you can tap into its cool vibrations.” Other critics, like Cody Dericks from Next Best Picture, found it a “gentle yet humorous look at how we interact with the people we have no choice but to know.”

While some, such as The Playlist’s Marshall Shaffer, found it not exceptionally distinguished, many critics connected with its unique rhythm and emotional depth. The International Cinephile Society lauded it as “one of the year’s most lovely, gentle films.”

Produced by Charles Gillibert, Joshua Astrachan, Carter Logan, and Atilla Salih Yücer, ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ is set for a domestic release in December, following its festival run and early international sales.
