TikTok has significantly upgraded its direct messaging (DM) functionality, introducing voice notes and the ability to share multiple images and videos. The popular platform, known primarily for short-form video content, is evolving its messaging experience to foster deeper user interactions, aligning with features found on other leading social communication apps.

Users can now record and send voice notes up to 60 seconds long within one-to-one and group chats. Additionally, the update allows the sharing of up to nine images or videos at once, either captured directly through the in-app camera or selected from a device’s camera roll, with editing options available before sending.

Safety remains a priority, with TikTok implementing measures such as preventing users from sending images or videos as an initial message request. Automated systems are also in place to detect and block inappropriate content, particularly for users under 18, while those over 18 have the option to enable additional safety toggles. These enhancements aim to position TikTok as a more comprehensive communication hub, building on previous updates like group chats and Creator Chat Rooms.
