Urgent Evacuations Ordered as Wildfires Intensify in California’s Napa County and Central Oregon

Emergency evacuations are currently in effect as multiple wildfires continue to blaze across the Western United States, posing significant threats in California’s world-famous Napa County and central Oregon.

In California, the Pickett Fire, which ignited on Thursday, has already consumed nearly 4,690 acres in Napa County. As of Saturday, the blaze remains only 7% contained, leading to urgent evacuation orders. While the cause is still under investigation, a massive response effort is underway, involving 1,230 personnel, 80 fire engines, and seven helicopters. Cal Fire operations section chief Jeremy Pierce has differentiated the current situation from the devastating 2020 Glass Fire, noting that the Pickett Fire is primarily slope and fuel-driven, not aided by extreme winds, allowing for better containment efforts.

Concurrently, central Oregon is battling the rapidly expanding Flat Fire, which also sparked on Thursday and has scorched at least 3,300 acres. Fueled by persistent heat and dry conditions, the fire saw significant growth overnight Friday. Authorities have elevated evacuation statuses to Level 3, or “go now,” for critical areas, including near the Lake Billy Chinook reservoir, with residents warned to leave immediately as the threat is imminent. Officials have issued stern advisories, stressing that emergency services may not be available for those who delay departure. The cause of the Flat Fire is also under investigation.
