Melbourne, Australia – Trainee surgeon Ryan Cho, 28, was released on bail Friday, August 22, 2025, after being accused of secretly video recording hundreds of female medical colleagues in staff restrooms across three Australian hospitals. The development comes as Cho faces a potential 500 charges related to an alleged 4,500 intimate videos.

Justice James Elliott of the Victoria state Supreme Court ruled for Cho’s release under strict conditions, including that he reside with his parents, who recently moved from Singapore to Melbourne, and that a $50,000 Australian dollar ($32,000 USD) surety be posted. Cho also surrendered his Singapore passport.

Prosecutors had argued against bail, citing Cho’s recent suspension from his job and new permanent residency in Australia as potential inducements to flee. However, the judge noted Cho’s lack of criminal connections and the surrender of his passport as factors mitigating flight risk.

Police allege Cho recorded intimate images of at least 460 women, primarily in the staff restrooms of Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center, and Royal Melbourne Hospital, with offenses dating back to 2021. Cho was initially arrested in July after a recording device was discovered in an Austin Hospital restroom. He has not yet entered pleas to the charges, which include intentionally recording intimate images without permission.
