Villanova, PA – A terrifying active shooter report that locked down Villanova University’s campus yesterday, August 21, has been confirmed as a “cruel hoax” by university officials. The incident, which prompted a massive law enforcement response and caused widespread panic, fortunately resulted in no injuries or evidence of firearms.

Villanova President Rev. Peter Donohue stated that while the community is relieved, the events have deeply shaken everyone. The false alarm occurred during the university’s orientation mass for new students, leading to immediate shelter-in-place orders for students and staff.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro have both condemned the act, known as “swatting,” and vowed a thorough investigation. The FBI is now involved, working with local authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for the fake threat. Governor Shapiro emphasized that “swatting is illegal” and directed state police to use “every tool at our disposal” to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Police received a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. Thursday reporting an active shooter in the law school building, with claims of at least one victim. Radnor Township Superintendent of Police Christopher Flanagan confirmed that all reports were false and the campus was cleared, reiterating the seriousness of such hoaxes as a crime.

The Villanova incident follows another similar unfounded active shooter scare earlier Thursday at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, which is also under investigation by multiple agencies.
