Israel Commences Major Gaza City Ground Offensive Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

The Israeli military has announced the commencement of the initial stages of a significant ground assault on Gaza City. Explosions have been reported lighting up the skyline as troops begin operations in key areas like Zeitoun and Jabalia, laying groundwork for a broader offensive approved by Defence Minister Israel Katz and awaiting final security cabinet endorsement this week.

This intensified military action follows the breakdown of indirect ceasefire negotiations, with Hamas accusing Israel of obstructing a deal in favor of continuing a ‘brutal war.’ Approximately 60,000 reservists are being called up for early September to support the operation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued dire warnings, stating that further displacement and hostilities risk worsening an already catastrophic situation for Gaza’s 2.1 million residents. International allies, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have condemned the plan, fearing it could lead to widespread disaster and regional instability.

Hundreds of thousands of Gaza City residents are expected to be ordered to evacuate to southern Gaza shelters. IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated that troops are already holding the outskirts of Gaza City, targeting Hamas infrastructure while also aiming to minimize civilian harm through evacuation warnings.

Gaza’s Hamas-run Civil Defence agency reported 25 fatalities across the territory on Wednesday due to Israeli strikes. Concerns are also mounting for the estimated 50 hostages still held by Hamas, with their families fearing increased danger from the ground offensive. The ICRC has reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian aid access to prevent an irreversible crisis.

This offensive marks a significant escalation in the conflict that began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, over 62,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry.
