Pierre Poilievre Secures Parliament Return in Crucial Alberta By-Election

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has successfully secured a new Parliament seat, winning a crucial by-election in Alberta’s Battle River-Crowfoot riding. This victory marks his return to the House of Commons, just four months after his party’s defeat by Mark Carney’s Liberals and his personal loss of his long-held Ottawa-area seat.
Addressing a jubilant crowd on Monday, Poilievre expressed his gratitude, stating, “Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life.” Preliminary results from Canada’s electoral commission show Poilievre leading with an overwhelming 80.4% of the vote, though final ballots are still being tallied.
The by-election, held in a historically Conservative stronghold, saw a record 214 candidates, many linked to a protest group advocating for electoral reform. Voters navigated an unusual write-in ballot process due to the high number of contenders, with over 50,000 ballots cast from nearly 86,000 eligible voters.
Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his congratulations to Poilievre on X, acknowledging his return to Parliament and thanking Liberal opponent Darcy Spady. Poilievre’s win enables him to assume his role as leader of Canada’s official opposition when Parliament reconvenes for its autumn sitting on September 15th.
The special election was initiated in June following former Conservative MP Damian Kurek’s decision to step aside, allowing Poilievre to run. Poilievre now faces a mandatory leadership review in January, where Conservative party members will vote on his continued leadership.
