Devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains have claimed the lives of at least 194 people across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the last 24 hours. The mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in north-west Pakistan has been hit hardest, accounting for 180 fatalities.

The widespread destruction includes at least 30 homes obliterated, and rescue operations have been severely hampered after a helicopter crashed, killing its five crew members. Nine more deaths were reported in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with an additional five in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Government forecasters warn that heavy rainfall is expected to persist until August 21 in the country’s northwest, where several areas have already been officially declared disaster zones, intensifying the ongoing crisis and challenging relief efforts.
