Immigration Raid Fatality in Monrovia Sparks Outcry, Investigation Underway

A man was tragically killed on a Southern California freeway Thursday after reportedly fleeing an immigration raid at a Home Depot in Monrovia, Los Angeles County. Authorities confirmed the man was struck by a vehicle on the 210 Freeway and later died from his injuries.
Monrovia City Manager Dylan Feik stated that police observed the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity after receiving calls about it. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denies its agents pursued the individual, and claims no prior knowledge of the incident, eyewitness accounts and social media videos suggest a chaotic scene.
The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) spokesperson Palmira Figueroa reported that 13 workers were detained during what she described as a “violent, aggressive bust,” with some agents allegedly chasing workers in cars. State Assemblymember John Harabedian echoed concerns, stating on Instagram that raids like this “terrorize families, instill fear, and put lives at risk.”
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, and the victim’s identity has not yet been released. This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement, particularly at locations frequented by day laborers, and comes as an appeals court recently upheld a temporary restraining order limiting agents’ ability to detain individuals based solely on language, job, or location.
