Google Gemini AI Gets Automatic Memory, Enhanced Privacy Controls Rolling Out Now

Google is rolling out a significant update to its Gemini AI chatbot, introducing an automatic memory feature that allows the AI to recall past conversations and user preferences without explicit prompting. This new capability aims to personalize Gemini’s responses by automatically leveraging previously discussed details and interests.
Expanding on an earlier update that required users to ask Gemini to remember specific information, the AI will now automatically retain ‘key details and preferences.’ For instance, if you’ve previously used Gemini for ideas on a YouTube channel about Japanese culture, future requests for video suggestions might automatically include themes like trying Japanese food.
Users retain full control over this new memory feature. It will be enabled by default, but can be easily disabled by navigating to the Gemini app’s settings, selecting ‘Personal Context,’ and toggling off ‘Your past chats with Gemini.’ The rollout begins today for Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries, with plans to expand to more regions and the Gemini 2.5 Flash model.
In related privacy enhancements, Google is also rebranding ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ to ‘Keep Activity’ in the coming weeks. Crucially, starting September 2nd, enabling ‘Keep Activity’ will allow Google to use a sample of file and photo uploads to Gemini to improve its services. Users who previously disabled ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ will find ‘Keep Activity’ remains off.
Further bolstering privacy, Gemini is introducing ‘temporary chats.’ These conversations will not appear in recent chat history, nor will they be used for personalizing future interactions or training Google’s AI models. Temporary chats are saved for only 72 hours, offering a secure option for exploring private questions or preventing specific details from influencing future AI output.
