Tropical Storm Erin is on the verge of intensifying into the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, with forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) anticipating it will reach hurricane strength by late Thursday or early Friday. As of Wednesday morning, Erin was located 1,305 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west at 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

The storm’s general westward motion is expected to continue through Thursday, shifting to a west-northwestward track by Thursday night and into the weekend. This path is projected to bring the center of Erin near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.

While there are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect, the NHC advises residents in the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico to prepare for significant swells generated by Erin starting this weekend. These conditions are likely to create life-threatening surf and rip currents. Authorities emphasize the importance of having preparedness plans in place, given the uncertainty of potential future impacts on the U.S. East Coast, the Greater Antilles, and the Bahamas.
