New video footage, released by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem this past Sunday, reportedly depicts the moment Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen was killed by an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank last month. The incident, which occurred on July 28 in Umm al-Khair, shows Israeli settler Yinon Levi firing a gun towards the individual filming, identified as Hathaleen, an English teacher and father of three.

The footage, obtained from Hathaleen’s family, shows Levi firing his weapon during a confrontation with unarmed Palestinians. While the video cuts, the camera continues to record sounds of distress. Despite witness accounts and the new video evidence, Levi was briefly detained and subsequently released from house arrest by an Israeli court, citing a lack of evidence.

B’Tselem has condemned the killing as another stark example of Palestinians’ vulnerability to violence, with perpetrators often enjoying impunity. Hathaleen, a vocal critic of settler violence, had also contributed to the Oscar-winning film “No Other Land,” which profiled the very area where he was killed. This incident highlights the ongoing surge in settler attacks on Palestinians since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war.
