Tropical Storm Erin has officially formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, marking a significant development for the 2025 hurricane season. Forecasters anticipate the storm will strengthen throughout the week and could become the Atlantic’s first hurricane of the season.

As of late Monday afternoon, Erin was located approximately 2,155 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm originated just west of the Cabo Verde islands, where drone footage reveals significant flooding and officials have declared a state of emergency.

Early models project Erin to intensify into a major hurricane as it approaches the Caribbean islands by week’s end. While its long-term path remains uncertain, most forecasts suggest a pivot northwest and then north. The storm currently poses no immediate threat to the U.S. mainland.

Erin is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began in June and typically peaks in August, September, and October. This new activity coincides with the start of the school year in parts of South Florida, a region highly susceptible to hurricane impacts.
