Milwaukee is assessing the damage and beginning recovery efforts after a weekend of unprecedented rainfall led to severe flash flooding across the city. Historic downpours on Saturday, which saw 5.74 inches of rain fall in just hours—a month and a half’s worth—caused widespread disruption, including the early closure of the beloved Wisconsin State Fair and significant impacts on Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.

Emergency services conducted numerous water rescues as streets, basements, and creeks were overwhelmed, leaving vehicles stranded. The Milwaukee River reached a record crest of 11.19 feet, surpassing its 2010 record. The severe weather was part of a larger system that also affected Nebraska, causing a fatality.

The Wisconsin State Fair was forced to shut down early on Saturday, canceling a Lynyrd Skynyrd performance, and organizers announced it would not reopen for its final day on Sunday. Airport runways, taxiways, and an underpass tunnel were also submerged. While the most intense rainfall has passed, officials continue to urge caution as the region faces ongoing flood watches and the potential for additional localized street flooding into Monday.
