The highly anticipated Perseids meteor shower, renowned as one of the best celestial spectacles, is set to reach its peak next week on August 12-13, 2025, particularly early Wednesday morning for North American viewers. However, this year’s display faces a significant challenge: a bright, 84% full waning gibbous moon will coincide with the peak activity, severely compromising visibility.

According to the American Meteor Society, the lunar conditions are expected to reduce the shower’s activity by at least 75%, making only the brightest meteors visible. Enthusiasts can anticipate seeing merely 10-20 Perseids per hour, a stark contrast to the 50 per hour typically observed under darker conditions. Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society notes that the strength of the Perseid display varies annually, primarily due to lunar interference.

Despite the bright moon, the Perseids, which originate from debris left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, will continue until August 23. Experts advise seeking out safe, rural areas with minimal light pollution for the best chance of viewing. While the peak offers the most activity, some suggest attempting to view the shower a week or so past the peak when the moon is less bright. NASA recommends early morning viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, before sunrise, although some meteors may be visible as early as 10 p.m.
