Florida’s recently established migrant detention center, controversially dubbed ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ by former President Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of inhumane treatment and substandard conditions. The remote Everglades facility, which commenced its first deportation flights late last month, was swiftly erected by Governor DeSantis as a punitive measure to deter illegal immigration.

Detainees within the hastily constructed tent facility, designed to hold up to 5,000 individuals, report a litany of grievances. Complaints include inadequate food, severe mosquito infestations, overflowing toilets, insufficient air conditioning, continuous lighting, and a stark lack of access to showers and legal representation. Lawyers claim they are denied entry, forced to communicate with clients solely by phone or Zoom.

A 21-year-old Nicaraguan asylum-seeker, who requested anonymity, recently recounted a harrowing experience. He alleged that after a dispute over clothing regulations, guards used a racial slur, then shackled his hands and feet, placing him in a 4×4-foot outdoor ‘box’ under the scorching Florida sun for six hours. He described the treatment as ‘unhuman,’ stating, ‘They treat us like real criminals that murdered. We’re just immigrants.’

While independent verification remains challenging due to limited access for journalists and lawyers, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management has categorically denied the claims, insisting that guards adhere to all proper state and federal protocols. Republican officials have also defended the facility, emphasizing its role as a prison for individuals, many of whom they state have criminal histories, and not a ‘five-star resort.’
