A smartwatch worn by one of the victims proved crucial in locating the wreckage of a small plane that tragically crashed in the dense forests near West Yellowstone, Montana. Officials confirmed Monday that the device’s precise location data guided search-and-rescue teams to the site.

All three individuals aboard the aircraft – Rodney Conover, 60, and Madison Conover, 23, both from Tennessee, along with Kurt Enoch Robey, 55, of Utah – were tragically found deceased at the scene, according to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office.

The Piper Cherokee, a small single-engine plane, had departed from West Yellowstone Airport late Thursday but failed to reach its destination. The search operation commenced Friday afternoon after the US Department of Transportation’s Aero Division alerted local authorities. Guided by the precise location data transmitted from a passenger’s smartwatch, search planes quickly pinpointed the crash site just south of West Yellowstone. Despite the wreckage being obscured by dense timber, aerial search teams were able to spot it from above. Ground crews then navigated the rugged terrain to reach the site, confirming the fatalities. The victims’ remains were subsequently airlifted for transfer to the county coroner.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Initial reports indicate gusty winds and cold overnight temperatures were present in the area at the time of the incident. Sheriff Dan Springer extended his profound condolences to the families of those lost in this tragic accident.
