Three veteran deputies tragically died following an explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility in East L.A. on Friday. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Center on North Eastern Avenue, involved members of the department’s elite arson explosives detail.

Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed the fatalities at a news conference, identifying the fallen as Detectives Joshua Kelley-Ecklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. All three were assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail and had served the department for 19, 22, and 33 years respectively. Sheriff Luna described the event as the largest loss of life for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department since 1857.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with assistance from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the community, deeming it an isolated incident. Condolences have poured in from various law enforcement agencies and elected officials across Los Angeles County, and flags at county buildings were lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen.
