Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro was ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor on Friday, a development he described as a ‘supreme humiliation.’ The measure, part of a Supreme Court order, came as federal police conducted searches at his home and party headquarters in Brasília.

The strict conditions imposed prohibit Bolsonaro from leaving his residence at night, communicating with foreign diplomats, or using social media. He is also barred from contacting other individuals under investigation by the Supreme Court, including his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro.

These restrictions are linked to an ongoing Supreme Court trial where Bolsonaro is accused of leading an alleged attempt to overturn the 2022 election results. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, overseeing the case, indicated that recent actions by Bolsonaro and his son constituted ‘blatant confessions of criminal conduct.’

Former U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in, calling Bolsonaro’s treatment “terrible and unjust” and even linking new U.S. tariffs on Brazil to the trial. Despite this, Brazilian Supreme Court sources indicate the tariffs will not influence the judicial proceedings, which are expected to resume between August and September. Bolsonaro has consistently dismissed the trial as a ‘witch hunt.’
