MINNEAPOLIS — A federal grand jury has formally indicted Vance Boelter on murder, stalking, and firearms charges in connection with the fatal shootings of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the serious wounding of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. The indictment, announced Tuesday, paves the way for a federal trial that could potentially seek the death penalty for Boelter, despite Minnesota’s state-level abolition of capital punishment.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson described the events as an unprecedented “political assassination” that has deeply shaken the state. During a press conference, Thompson disclosed chilling new details, including the discovery of a handwritten letter from Boelter addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel. In the letter, Boelter allegedly confessed to the shootings and made bizarre claims of off-the-books military training, international missions, and even an alleged solicitation from Governor Tim Walz to kill U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith. Prosecutors have dismissed these claims as fantasy, though Thompson noted investigators found lists of politicians from Minnesota and other states, as well as attorneys.

The motive behind the violence remains largely unclear, despite investigators probing political extremism. Boelter, described by friends as an evangelical Christian with conservative views, has denied his actions were tied to his opposition to abortion or support for former President Donald Trump in a recent interview. He faces both federal and state charges, with the federal case proceeding first.

The horrific events unfolded on June 14, when Boelter, allegedly disguised as a police officer, attacked the Hoffmans before proceeding to the Hortmans’ home, where he killed the couple. Senator Hoffman is currently in a rehabilitation facility, while Yvette Hoffman was released from the hospital days after the attack. The Hortmans’ funeral, attended by prominent political figures including former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, took place on June 28. Boelter was apprehended about 40 hours after the shootings following a massive manhunt.
