Sony has just surprised the photography world with the immediate unveiling of the RX1R III, a fixed-lens 35mm full-frame compact camera. Arriving nearly a decade after its predecessor, the RX1R II, this highly anticipated model boasts a powerful 61MP Exmor R sensor coupled with Sony’s latest image processing technology, promising exceptional low noise and high dynamic range.

Designed as a versatile ‘carrying around’ camera for street photographers and serious amateurs, the RX1R III is notably smaller and lighter than its main competitors, weighing in at just 17 ounces. Its compact form factor is partly due to the Zeiss Sonnar T 35mm f2 lens, which is integrated partly within the camera body. Key features include a macro ring for close-up shots and Sony’s innovative ‘Step Crop Shooting’ function, allowing users to simulate 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths.

The RX1R III also incorporates Sony’s advanced Bionz XR and AI processors, enabling highly accurate subject tracking, including human bodies, heads, and eyes, even when faces are obscured. It leverages 693 phase-detection AF points, covering approximately 78 percent of the image area. While not a professional video camera, it supports 4K 30 fps video with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling and 1080p at up to 120 fps.

The Sony RX1R III will soon be available for pre-order, priced at $5,100, with shipping scheduled to commence on July 31st.
