Fall River, MA – Nine individuals have been confirmed dead and over 30 others hospitalized after a devastating fire ripped through an assisted living facility in Fall River on Sunday night. Officials are calling the incident at Gabriel House on Oliver Street an “unspeakable tragedy,” as the community grapples with the immense loss.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quin III identified seven of the nine victims on Monday as Rui Albernaz, 64; Ronald Codega, 61; Margaret Duddy, 69; Robert King, 78; Kim Mackin, 71; Richard Rochon, 78; and Eleanor Willett, 86. The identities of a 70-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described a chaotic scene upon arrival Sunday evening, with residents visible at windows and doorways awaiting rescue. Firefighters, including 30 off-duty personnel recalled to duty, successfully rescued at least a dozen people using ladders. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries during the intense operation.

While the investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, authorities currently state it does not appear to be suspicious. The blaze was contained to one wing, but smoke damage is extensive throughout the facility, displacing approximately 70 residents. The Red Cross is providing shelter assistance, and a family reunification center has been established at St. Anne’s Hospital.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her condolences and offered full state assistance, commending the heroic efforts of first responders. Local officials, including Mayor Paul Coogan and District Attorney Tom Quinn, also praised the swift and courageous actions of emergency crews in the face of such a horrific event.

The extensive investigation, involving the Fall River Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, is expected to be lengthy due to the need to interview numerous witnesses. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
