Former middleweight boxing champion Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on Wednesday for allegedly overstaying his visa and providing false information on a green card application. Federal officials confirmed Thursday that Chávez Jr. is slated for deportation to Mexico, where he faces active organized crime charges.

The arrest in Studio City, Los Angeles, comes just days after Chávez Jr.’s high-profile boxing match against influencer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California, on June 28, 2025. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the decision to arrest Chávez Jr. was made on June 27, the day before the fight.

Chávez Jr.’s attorney, Michael Goldstein, described the allegations as “outrageous” and expressed concerns about the increased immigration enforcement in Southern California. Goldstein stated he was unaware of his client’s current detention location as of Thursday morning, but noted Chávez Jr. was due in court Monday for unrelated gun possession charges and a substance abuse program update.

ICE officials confirmed Chávez Jr. overstayed a tourist visa that expired in February 2024, having entered the U.S. in August 2023. Additionally, he is accused of submitting multiple fraudulent statements in an April 2024 green card application based on his marriage to Frida Muñoz. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services had flagged Chávez Jr. as an “egregious public safety threat” in December 2023, despite which he was allowed re-entry in January 2024.

Mexican authorities have an active arrest warrant for Chávez Jr. since March 2023, linking him to organized crime and trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives, with alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has initiated extradition procedures.

Chávez Jr., son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez, has had a tumultuous career marked by suspensions, missed weights, and struggles with substance addiction. He recently claimed sobriety after attending rehabilitation, appearing in better shape for the Paul fight, a match he ultimately lost.
