Google Photos Rolls Out Option to Disable AI Search Features

Google Photos is empowering users with a new level of control, allowing them to completely disable the integrated AI search experience, known as “Ask Photos” or Gemini features. This move provides a welcome choice for those who prefer the traditional search interface or wish to opt out of AI-powered functionalities.

The “Ask Photos” feature, which initially launched in late 2024, aimed to enhance search capabilities within Google Photos by leveraging AI to find specific events, people, and objects. While the updated version offers improved speed and a cleaner interface, Google is now uniquely offering users the ability to switch off these Gemini-integrated features entirely.

Disabling the AI search is straightforward. Users need to ensure they have the latest Google Photos update, as the option is rolling out server-side. Once available, navigate to your profile picture, select “Photos settings,” then “Preferences,” and finally “Gemini features in Photos.” Within this section, a toggle for “Search with Ask Photos” allows you to quickly revert to the classic search UI, replacing the “Ask” button with “Search” on the bottom bar.
