The manhunt for the suspect accused of fatally shooting Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and injuring State Senator John Hoffman ended Sunday with the arrest of 57-year-old Vance Boelter. Boelter was taken into custody without incident after a two-day search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The attack, described by officials as politically motivated, also left Hortman’s husband, Mark, dead and Senator Hoffman’s wife, Yvette, injured. Boelter, who identified himself as a security professional and had previously served on a workforce development board with Senator Hoffman, faces two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, according to court documents.

Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office released an image of Boelter’s arrest, stating, “The face of evil. After relentless and determined police work, the killer is now in custody.”

Governor Tim Walz commended law enforcement’s efforts and publicly mourned Representative Hortman, praising her as embodying the state’s values. He also highlighted the Hoffman family’s bravery, suggesting their actions likely prevented further casualties.

The Governor’s statement extended beyond the immediate tragedy, addressing the broader issue of political violence in the United States. He cited past attacks on elected officials and emphasized that such acts of violence cannot become normalized. “This cannot be the norm,” Walz declared, “It cannot be the way we deal with our political differences.”
