Texas Governor Greg Abbott has authorized President Donald Trump to deploy members of the Texas National Guard to other states, including Illinois and Oregon, to protect federal officials. The move, announced Sunday, comes amidst escalating protests at ICE facilities in those states.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker swiftly condemned the planned deployments as ‘Trump’s invasion’ and urged Abbott to refuse coordination. However, Governor Abbott responded less than an hour later, stating he ‘fully authorize[s]’ the president’s decision, adding that if federal authorities cannot ensure safety, the Texas Guard will.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s memo indicated the orders would be effective immediately for an initial 60-day period, with potential extensions for cities like Portland and Chicago. However, the deployment faces immediate legal challenges; a federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked the deployment of any National Guard units to Oregon, as reported by The Associated Press.

This authorization marks another instance of Governor Abbott utilizing the Texas National Guard for state or federal operations, following previous deployments for immigration arrests and his extensive border security initiative, Operation Lone Star.
