MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A devastating mass shooting in downtown Montgomery late Saturday night into early Sunday, October 5, 2025, has left two people dead and 14 injured, sparking an urgent investigation. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Bibb Street and Commerce Street, involved two groups exchanging gunfire in a crowded entertainment district.

Two victims have tragically died, including a woman, while 14 others sustained injuries. Among the injured were two juveniles, one of whom remains in life-threatening condition. In total, three victims are currently in critical condition, and nine others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Baptist Medical Center South confirmed treating seven victims, with one fatality at their facility.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed condemned the “reckless and selfish” act, promising that suspects would be held accountable. Police Chief Jim Graboys emphasized that the department “will not rest until we put the people involved in jail,” clarifying that this was “not a typical mass shooting,” but rather a targeted exchange of fire between two parties who showed a blatant disregard for public safety. The shooting occurred during a busy weekend in the city, coinciding with major events like the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic and the Alabama National Fair.

Investigators are actively pursuing leads, reviewing surveillance footage, and questioning multiple individuals. Authorities have recovered high-capacity weapons linked to the case and are being assisted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the ATF. The Montgomery Police Department urges anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact them at 334-625-2831 or Central Alabama CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).

The tragedy has elicited strong reactions from community leaders, including Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, who highlighted ongoing concerns about crime in the capital city.
