Former President Trump has called on Hamas to swiftly engage with the latest Gaza peace plan, following a reported reduction in Israeli military strikes. His remarks come as U.S. negotiators, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, prepare for talks in Cairo with Egyptian, Qatari, and Hamas representatives aimed at resolving the two-year conflict.

In a social media post, Trump pressed Hamas to capitalize on the current lull in combat operations, warning against any delay and stating that ‘all bets will be off’ without a rapid agreement. This push aligns with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expressed hope that all remaining hostages will be returned by October 13, coinciding with the end of an upcoming Jewish holiday.

Netanyahu stated, ‘It is not final yet, we are working on it diligently, and, God willing, I hope that in the coming days, during the Sukkot holiday, I will be able to announce to you the return of all our hostages, the living and the fallen alike, in a single operation, while the IDF remains in the depth of the Strip and in the areas that control it.’

A hospital official confirmed a significant decrease in bombing activity in Gaza City after weeks of intense strikes. However, Shifa Hospital director Mohamed Abu Selmiyah reported at least five Palestinian deaths, with NPR noting three overnight airstrikes.

The White House recently unveiled a 20-point peace plan, which Hamas has partially accepted. A key provision requires the immediate release of all remaining hostages within three days of the plan’s implementation. Following Hamas’s agreement to this, Trump previously urged Israel to ‘immediately stop the bombing of Gaza’ to facilitate the hostage release.

Facing international and domestic pressure, Netanyahu issued a rare late-night statement acknowledging a commitment to end the war in line with Trump’s proposals. Israeli military activity in Gaza has reportedly been reduced to a minimum, focusing only on defensive actions. This operational pause is intended to allow Hamas members to locate the 48 remaining hostages, though fewer than half are believed to be alive, and some have died, potentially extending the recovery time beyond the allotted 72 hours.

U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, accompanied by Kushner, will lead the American negotiating team in Egypt. Discussions are expected to cover the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, humanitarian aid, and the scale of a prisoner exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli detention. Hamas has indicated that the success of these talks depends on approval from other Palestinian factions, including Islamic Jihad, which has now backed Hamas’s acceptance of Trump’s plan.

Protests demanding an end to the war have erupted across Europe, as Gaza’s Health Ministry reports a Palestinian death toll exceeding 67,000 since the conflict began. Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid, has publicly supported Trump’s proposal and its implementation by the Israeli government, while a group representing hostage families expressed unprecedented hope for their loved ones’ return.
