The Trump administration has canceled nearly $8 billion in climate-related project funding for primarily Democratic-controlled states, an announcement made by Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought on Wednesday. This significant cut coincides with a federal government shutdown, which began after Congress failed to pass a stopgap funding bill on September 29, 2025.

Vought, a key administration official, announced the decision via a post on social media platform X, stating, “Nearly $8 billion in Green New Scam funding to fuel the Left’s climate agenda is being cancelled.” He indicated that more information would be released by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The affected projects are located in 17 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington state. These states notably voted against President Donald Trump in the 2024 election, where he defeated then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the Electoral College.

CNBC has reached out to the Department of Energy for comment regarding the cancellation.
