Fans of Square Enix’s cult classic ‘Parasite Eve’ can look forward to a spiritual successor, as Chongqing-based developer IceSitruuna has officially announced ‘Parasite Mutant’ for PlayStation 5. Slated for release in 2026, this new science-fiction horror RPG aims to fill the void left by Square Enix’s long-dormant franchise.

Set in a grim, distant future, ‘Parasite Mutant’ casts players as psionic agent Nova, dispatched to an abandoned island city teeming with horrifying creatures. The mission promises to profoundly alter Nova’s destiny, hinting at a deep and unsettling narrative.

A key feature that will resonate with ‘Parasite Eve’ enthusiasts is the ‘Active Time Chains’ battle system. This mechanic is described as a direct evolution of the original game’s ‘Active Time Bar’, allowing players to move and dodge freely while waiting for their attack gauge to fill before unleashing offensive maneuvers. The game will also sport a ‘semi-realistic’ anime art style, with an optional CRT filter available for those seeking to recapture the late 90s aesthetic of its inspiration. Additional features include unlockable outfits and support for New Game+.

With Square Enix showing no signs of revisiting the ‘Parasite Eve’ series, ‘Parasite Mutant’ emerges as a promising new title for PS5 owners eager for a fresh take on the unique blend of horror and RPG gameplay.
