Denmark has enacted a temporary ban on civil drone flights across its airspace, effective from Monday to Friday, in a direct response to a surge of unexplained drone sightings last week and ahead of hosting a pivotal European Union summit. The measure aims to mitigate any risk of “hostile” drones being confused with legal ones, according to Transport Minister Thomas Danielson.

The ban follows multiple reports of suspicious drone activity over civilian airports and military installations, including Aalborg Airport on September 24, which led to airport closures and travel disruptions for tens of thousands. These incidents coincide with top European leaders convening in Copenhagen on Wednesday for a European Council meeting focused on defense and the war in Ukraine, followed by a European Political Community summit.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has indicated that while the perpetrators remain unconfirmed, Russia is primarily seen as the threat to Europe’s security, a claim the Kremlin denies. In response to the escalating situation, NATO announced on Saturday that it is upgrading defense measures in the Baltic Sea region. The German air defense frigate FSG Hamburg, part of NATO’s “Baltic Sentry” mission, arrived in Copenhagen on Sunday to enhance airspace surveillance, with a mobile radar installation pictured at a Danish military site on September 26, 2025. Additionally, Germany is providing “Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems,” and Sweden has pledged an anti-drone system, underscoring the international effort to secure the region during this critical period.
