KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine is assessing the damage and tending to casualties after Russia launched one of its most sustained drone and missile attacks on Sunday, targeting Kyiv and other regions. The relentless assault, which lasted over 12 hours, resulted in at least four fatalities and left dozens injured across the country.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russia deployed 595 drones and 48 missiles overnight, with Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepting 568 drones and 43 missiles. Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack, experiencing loud explosions and widespread damage to a cardiology clinic, factories, and numerous residential buildings. Emergency services confirmed 67 people were wounded nationwide, including at least 16 in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia.

In response to the large-scale aggression, neighboring Poland temporarily closed airspace near two southeastern cities and scrambled its air force jets. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his urgent plea to international partners for decisive action, including cutting off Russia’s energy revenues and providing more advanced air defense systems like Patriot missiles, to bolster Ukraine’s stretched defenses.

Russia’s defense ministry stated on Sunday that it carried out a “massive” strike on Ukraine, claiming to target military infrastructure, including airfields, and denying any intent to target civilians.
