Air India 787 Crash: 270 Fatalities, Black Box Recovered, DGCA Orders Safety Checks
A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, resulting in 270 fatalities. The aircraft, approximately 11 years old and with a documented flight history of 25 Ahmedabad-London Gatwick round trips in the last two years (Flightradar24 data), impacted a building near the airport, killing nearly all 242 passengers and crew. One survivor remains hospitalized.
The investigation, led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) with support from US and UK teams, has recovered a black box, which is expected to be crucial in determining the cause of the accident. Over 30 victims have been identified via DNA analysis. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated additional safety inspections for Air India’s Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet as a preventative measure.
The incident prompted high-level visits to the crash site and hospital, including Prime Minister Modi and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson.
