NEW DELHI – A devastating stampede at a political rally for popular Indian actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, known as Vijay, in Tamil Nadu has resulted in at least 40 deaths, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The state’s health minister, Ma Subramanian, reported that 124 individuals were also injured, with many still receiving treatment in hospitals.

The tragic incident unfolded on Saturday in the Karur district, where tens of thousands had gathered in sweltering heat to hear Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s most successful actors, who is campaigning for state elections in early 2026. Subramanian stated that 36 victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at hospitals Saturday night, with four more succumbing to their injuries later. Among the deceased were nine children.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with S. Sabesan, a local resident, noting that Vijay’s late arrival led to an immense crowd choking the roads despite barricades. Another witness, R. Rajendaran, recounted how commotion erupted as supporters chased Vijay’s vehicle when he attempted to leave after addressing the rally and throwing water bottles into the crowd.

Minister Subramanian attributed the disaster to “indiscipline” at the rally. The government has initiated a probe led by a former judge, with a report expected within a month. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced compensation of over $11,000 for the families of each victim.

Vijay, who retired from acting in 2024 to launch his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, expressed his profound sorrow on X, stating, “My heart is shattered… I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called the “unfortunate incident” “deeply saddening.”
