New Drone Sightings at Danish Military Bases Escalate ‘Hybrid Attack’ Fears

Denmark’s military has confirmed new drone sightings overnight at several of its sites, including the nation’s largest army base, Karup. These latest incursions come amidst a week of mysterious drone activity near critical infrastructure and airports, which Danish officials have labeled a ‘hybrid attack’ and hinted at potential Russian involvement.
An army spokesperson stated on Saturday that ‘several capabilities were deployed’ in response to the observations. Police confirmed that one to two drones were spotted around 8:15 pm (18:15 GMT) on Friday near and over the Karup military base in western Denmark, which is vital for housing military helicopters, airspace surveillance, and flight training. Although the civilian Midtjylland airport, which shares runways with Karup, was briefly closed, no flights were affected.
The recent wave of drone incidents across Scandinavia has led to the temporary closure of several airports, including Copenhagen Airport, the busiest in the Nordic region. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has directly accused Russia of posing a significant threat to European security, though Moscow has vehemently denied any involvement, calling the incidents a ‘staged provocation’.
In response to the escalating threats, defence ministers from approximately ten European Union countries convened on Friday, agreeing to prioritize the development of a ‘drone wall’ to bolster the bloc’s aerial defences. This initiative, inspired by lessons from Ukraine, aims for swift implementation. Copenhagen is set to host an EU summit this coming Wednesday and Thursday, with Sweden offering its anti-drone technology to secure the event.
