Governors across the Carolinas have issued emergency declarations as Tropical Storm Imelda rapidly approaches, urging residents to finalize preparations immediately. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Friday afternoon, followed by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein making a similar declaration on Saturday.

Both governors are emphasizing the critical need for residents to heed local emergency guidance and prepare for the storm’s arrival. Governor McMaster held a follow-up press conference on Saturday, cautioning that Imelda, like past storms such as Hurricane Helene, may behave unpredictably. “Your neighborhood may have things you have not seen before,” he warned, stressing that “the time to prepare is now.”

Local municipalities are also enacting emergency measures. The City of Charleston declared a state of emergency on Saturday morning, actively clearing storm drains, setting up temporary pumps in flood-prone areas, and staging barricades. Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune confirmed their civil emergency declaration on Friday was to enable swift, protective actions. North Charleston is providing sandbags to residents, while Raleigh, North Carolina, has lowered Lake Johnson in anticipation of heavy rainfall.

Imelda has already caused significant devastation in the Caribbean, with severe flooding, landslides, and at least one fatality reported in the Dominican Republic. Authorities there evacuated hundreds, highlighting the potential gravity of the approaching storm for the Carolinas.
