At least four people have been confirmed dead and two remain unaccounted for following intense flooding in parts of Arizona, officials reported Sunday. The disaster, which unfolded primarily on Saturday, September 27, has prompted Governor Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency to expedite resources to affected areas.

The flooding caused approximately 1,000 propane tanks to wash away from a distribution facility in downtown Globe, Arizona, creating a serious hazardous materials concern. Gila County Emergency Management has advised residents to shelter in place due to the potential for hazardous chemicals in the floodwaters and the explosion risk posed by the displaced tanks.

Search and rescue efforts are actively underway for potential additional victims. Two of the confirmed dead were found drowned in a vehicle, a third was found outside a vehicle in downtown Globe, and a fourth man, identified as Ander Polanco, was discovered dead outside his car as floodwaters receded. Authorities are investigating the cause of death for Polanco.

The city of Globe has warned that Historic Downtown Globe is currently unsafe due to compromised buildings, hazardous chemicals, and debris. Numerous agencies, including state and county resources, are assisting with search and rescue operations, hazmat assessment, and cleanup efforts, with over 100 additional personnel deployed.
