Wife of ICE Detainee Critically Injured in Dallas Facility Shooting Speaks Out on Husband’s Condition

DALLAS – Stephany Gauffeny, pregnant and deeply worried, is speaking out about her husband, Miguel Angel Garcia-Hernandez, who remains on life support after being critically injured in a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Wednesday. Garcia-Hernandez was being detained after an August 8 arrest for driving under the influence and is in the U.S. without legal status.
Gauffeny shared her anguish with NPR on Saturday, expressing fears that her husband might not survive to meet their unborn fifth child. Medical personnel at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas informed her on Friday evening that Garcia-Hernandez might not make it through the night, though he was still being kept alive by machines as of Saturday afternoon.
Adding to her distress, Gauffeny reported that her unconscious husband was shackled upon her first visit to the hospital. Due to his continued ICE custody, agents are controlling access to his room, complicating visits for Gauffeny and his brothers.
The shooting also injured Venezuelan detainee Jose Andres Bordones-Molina and killed 37-year-old Norlan Guzman Fuentes from El Salvador. ICE confirmed the identities of all three victims on Saturday, describing them as “criminal illegal aliens.” The shooter, identified by ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons as Joshua Jahn, 29, died of self-inflicted wounds. Law enforcement officials stated Jahn sought to “terrorize” ICE agents, but all victims were detainees, not officers.
Gauffeny’s decision to speak out was prompted by the government’s delay in identifying the victims. “I want his name to be known,” she stated, emphasizing that her husband was more than just an immigrant or detainee. She hopes the incident leads to improved security at ICE facilities to protect those inside.
Garcia-Hernandez, 31, a Mexican native who has lived in the U.S. since his teens, was pursuing permanent residency through his U.S. citizen wife. Gauffeny described him as a loving husband and father of four, known for his humor, generosity, and strong family devotion. He worked as a house painter before his detention and was the family’s main source of income. The family is now relying on a GoFundMe campaign for financial support.
