Google Messages is making significant strides in implementing an @mention system for chats, a highly anticipated feature that will allow users to directly tag others in conversations. Recent developments reveal a more intuitive tagging experience, moving beyond initial expectations.

Previously, users could only trigger @suggestions by explicitly typing the ‘@’ character. However, new progress indicates that Google Messages will now automatically suggest contacts for @mentions as users begin typing a name within a chat, streamlining the process and making it feel more natural, akin to social media interactions.

Furthermore, the recipient experience for @mentions is also being refined. When a user is tagged in a conversation, an ‘@’ symbol will now prominently appear next to the chat in their chat list, providing a clear visual cue that they have been mentioned and need to see the message. While the exact launch date for this feature remains unconfirmed, these advancements suggest that Google is actively working towards a public release.
