Ryan Routh Found Guilty of Attempted Trump Assassination in Florida

Ryan Routh, a 59-year-old US man, has been found guilty of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump near his Florida golf course. The verdict was announced by United States Attorney General Pam Bondi, who stated on social media that a jury determined Routh intended to kill Trump, then a former president and Republican presidential candidate, when he pointed a rifle through a fence while Trump was golfing at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
Routh was also convicted on four other charges, including impeding a federal agent and various weapons offences, and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The incident occurred on September 15, 2024, when Routh fled the golf course without firing a shot after a US Secret Service agent spotted him and his rifle and opened fire. Prosecutor John Shipley emphasized the seriousness of the plot, stating that Trump’s life was saved by the agent’s intervention.
The 12-day trial in Fort Pierce, Florida, highlighted concerns about political violence in the US. Attorney General Bondi lauded the verdict as a testament to the Department of Justice’s commitment to punishing such acts. Trump himself commented on Truth Social, calling Routh an “evil man with an evil intention.” Following the verdict, Routh reportedly attempted to harm himself in court and had to be restrained, while his daughter protested his innocence.
Prosecutors detailed that Routh arrived in South Florida a month before the incident, tracking Trump’s movements, using fake names, and carrying multiple phones. He allegedly waited for nearly 10 hours, concealed in bushes overlooking the sixth hole, where investigators later found a semiautomatic rifle, body armor plates, and a video camera aimed at the course. Routh was arrested along a Florida highway after Trump was discovered to be on the fifth hole, a few hundred yards away from Routh’s position.
